Quick 32 Sportsman Series top five for 2009 - Kevin Wicke - Champion

STRATFORD, ONTARIO (November 11, 2009) – There was a fair bit of thrashing with a new car, and some mechanical gremlins, but Kevin Wicke and his K&K Racing Dodge Stratus came out on top, winning the 2009 NAPA Quick 32 Sportsman Series Point Award Championship.

“We won rounds when we needed to,” explained Wicke, driver of the 604-cubic inch with B1 Heads - 2 stage NOS system-powered Stratus. “This was a new car for us, and we spent a lot of late nights with it.”

Wicke did not outright win any of the six Quick 32 Sportsman Series races this season, but always made the elimination rounds, and was the runner-up in the Top Sportsman class for the September 19 event at the Cayuga Dragway at TMP, the team’s best showing.

The Quick 32 Sportsman Series is comprised on Top Dragster, and Top Sportsman, cars. The two classes of cars race within their class, and then the winner of each class is paired for the event final, with that winner declared the event champion.

“We got the car to come around the last few races,” he said. “We had some mechanical woes, and we broke some little stuff which gave us lots of grief. But we figured out the tune-up.”

The RJ Race Cars Stratus, a former Pro Stock car, employs a Hutchinson Two-speed Powerglide/Coan Converter transmission and a Magna Fuel System setup. Kevin Zimmer crew chiefs with the team, and other members include Dan Culliton, Dennis Culliton, Kody Wicke, and Kayden Wicke. The team is sponsored by Fram Canada, Perth Auto Dismantlers, Skully Bros. Metal Fabrication, Bear's Performance Products, Ron's Precision Machine, Fraser Asphalt Paving, Hutchinson's Transmission and CVR Inc.

“I really want to thank my crew,” mentioned Wicke. “I had tremendous dedication from the team. And I couldn’t have done any of this without Zim (Zimmer).

“I also want to thank Larry at Bear’s (Performance),” he went on. “He was a big help in many aspects and a big thanks to him.”

Wicke also had good things to say about the new series.

”I loved the deal,” he said. “It was impressive. My crew and I really enjoyed it.”

The PMRA and Quick 32 Sportsman Series Championship Point Award Series winners will be honored at the Champions Banquet on Saturday, November 14, 2009 at The Best Western Cairn Croft Hotel in the Oak Room in Niagara Falls, Ontario.

About the Quick 32 Sportsman Series presented by NAPA Auto Parts:
The Quick 32 Sportsman Series presented by NAPA Auto Parts, www.Quick32.ca, of drag racing was started early in 2009 as an alternative for high-horsepower Sportsman-class teams to compete on a regular basis.

For 2009, dates included Toronto Motorsports Park in Cayuga, Ontario, starting with the season opener on May 16 and 17 and the season-closer “Double Header” on September 19 and 20, and the South-western Ontario track of the Grand Bend Motorplex on June 27 and 28, the Stratford Spectacular Hot August Nationals presented by Ideal Supply & NAPA Auto Parts August 15 and 16 and the Thunder by the Beach Weekend September 5 and 6.

With 32-car qualified fields comprised of the 16 quickest open wheeled cars (Top Dragster) and the 16 quickest door cars (Top Sportsman), the Quick 32 Sportsman Series featured the best in ET-style, dial-in drag racing, competing on a Sportsman ladder and pit door-slammers against dragsters in every race day final.

Competitors in this Ontario-based series must comply with the IHRA Top Dragster and Top Sportsman Safety rules and regulations, and the maximum dial-in will be 7.95 seconds for the quarter-mile.

This new venture provided $3000 to win for each event and $5000 for the annual Championship Point Award Series champion, payouts very popular with competitors and will provide large fields of race cars.

The Quick 32 Sportsman Series is committed in providing a professional atmosphere for its teams. It will also provide solid media and logistic support to ensure it becomes one of the most popular drag race series running Top Sportsman and Top Dragster race cars.

The Quick 32 Sportsman Series presented by NAPA Auto Parts competed several times with the Pro Modified Racing Association (PMRA), www.PMRA.ca, as well as selected special events, offering fans a great show of drag racing.

Pro Modified Racing Association's top five for 2009 - Bruce Boland - Champion

HAMILTON, ONTARIO (November 11, 2009) – There was no stopping Bruce Boland in Pro Modified Racing Association competition this year.

The veteran took another new car at the start of the season, winning four of the six PMRA events in 2009 to claim his third consecutive PMRA Point Award Series Championship.

“Nothing went wrong,” Boland explained about his success this year. “The car went better and better each weekend.”

After winning the 2008 PMRA title with his B&B Racing 1963 Corvette, Boland purchased the former Larry Sinke 1967 Chevy Nova Pro Modified, and went right back to his winning ways.

“We were lucky,” he added. “This car went down every track. Everything went great.”

In a year filled with highlights, the biggest highlight came during the July 18 running of the IHRA MOPAR Nationals at the Grand Bend Motorplex. Boland set the pace with a 4.030-second, 183.39-mph posting in qualifying and never looked back, winning the event on the eighth-mile. He also won PMRA events at TMP’s Cayuga Dragway June 14 and September 20 and at Grand Bend August 16.

Since he started in PMRA competition in 2005, Boland has won the title in 2007, 2008, and 2009.

Attendance and consistency has been a big part of his success, along with some great work on the car and behind the wheel.

Boland will be behind the wheel of a new car next year. He has sold the Nova, and will be competing next year in a 1963 Corvette, using the supercharged engine and driveline from the Nova.

Boland added he would not have had his success this year without the help of a dedicated crew and sponsors, which includes Backwoods Excavating & Float Service, Excel Motorsports, Pro Racing Fuels, A&A Auto Parts, and Double D Construction.

“I want to thank my crew, and my wife, and Mark Dochstader of Backwoods, who all stepped up and helped,” Boland said. “This championship is as much theirs as it is mine, and they all deserve a big thank-you.”

The PMRA and Quick 32 Sportsman Series Championship Point Award Series winners will be honored at the Champions Banquet on Saturday, November 14, 2009 at The Best Western Cairn Croft Hotel in the Oak Room in Niagara Falls, Ontario.

About the Pro Modified Racing Association (PMRA):
The Pro Modified Racing Association, www.PMRA.ca, was organized late in 2004, started racing operations in 2005, and is entering its sixth year of operation in 2010. The PMRA is a self-governing organization with input from its teams, and adheres to the technical and safety rules as outlined by the International Hot Rod Association (IHRA) and the National Hot Rod Association (NHRA).

The series has competed at event venues in Ontario, Quebec, and New York State.

The PMRA competed at several drag strips in 2009, including dates at Toronto Motorsports Park in Cayuga, Ontario, starting with the season opener on May 16 and 17, June 13 and 14 and the season-closer on September 19 and 20, and the South-western Ontario track of the Grand Bend Motorplex at the 10th Annual MOPAR Canadian Nationals July 17 to 19, the Stratford Spectacular Hot August Nationals presented by Ideal Supply & NAPA Auto Parts August 8 and 9 and the Thunder by the Beach Weekend on September 5 and 6.

Cars in the PMRA capture the true spirit of hot rodding, and the class is one of drag racing’s most exciting and colorful classes, offering a diverse group of race cars with different types of 2,500-horsepower supercharged, nitrous powered and turbocharged engines.

Combining classic body styles and modern equipment, constructors are permitted, within established rules and parameters, to modify and enhance the cars in both appearance and performance. The cars are fuelled by gasoline or methanol, propelling them down the quarter-mile in low six-second times at over 200 miles per hour. The PMRA provides drag race fans the opportunity to see, hear, and experience the popular Pro Modifieds, known as "the world's fastest door slammers".

Several of the PMRA events were run in conjunction with the Quick 32 Sportsman Series presented by NAPA Auto Parts, www.Quick32.ca, offering fans a great show of drag racing.

Mickey Thompson MiRock Superbike Series finals at Rockingham

Perfect Weather, Perfect Racing at The Rock

Fabulous weather, large fields, a huge crowd, and tight points battles made for a perfect finish to the Mickey Thompson MiRock Superbike Series at Steve Earwood's Rockingham Dragway in the sand hills of North Carolina.

Jeremy Teasley beat Adams Performance team boss Coby Adams in an all-Kawasaki ZX14 HTP Performance Real Street final. Running a comparatively mild motor this time around, Teasley used superb, consistent riding to make his way through the competitive field. On board Roger Starrette's blue '14, builder/tuner Adams was getting reacquainted quickly to riding a big bore bike with a big shot of nitrous. By the end of the weekend Adams was smooth as silk, but not strong enough to get past Teasley.

HTP's own Keith Thompson took his second straight Real Street championship on his Suzuki GSXR1000 despite spinning off the starting line and losing to Adams in round 2. Thompson was once again without HTP builder/tuner Cecil Towner III, who rushed back to Richmond, Virginia on Friday for the birth of his first child.

Former Pro Sportbike champ Vinnie Demito and rival Rodney Williford both moved up this year to the 68 inch Orient Express Pro Street class. Williford won the first race of the year, Demito the second, and so began a season long points battle that neither seemed to want to win. Demito struggled with the MTC Gen2 clutch and Williford lost the tune-up when he changed fuel systems. In stepped perennial champion of everything Mike Slowe, who threatened to steal yet another Pro Street crown. But Williford and Demito rose up to the challenge at The Rock, meeting in the final and vanquishing Slowe's hopes despite Mikey's number 1 qualifying 7.17. Slowe spun and lost to Williford in the semi. Then in a virtual replay of the April final, Demito spun wildly off the line and Williford powered to the win.

Sean "Skinny" Walsh won the last Pro Sportbike race ever over trailermate Anthony Navarro, the number 1 qualifier. Walsh led from start to finish, but Navarro reclaimed the class title that he "loaned" to Demito the last couple of years.

The new Crazy 8s index class made another popular showing, and this time Brandon Tyree beat Ernest Lassiter in the final round of the 35 bike field. Eatonton, Georgia's Baybay Yarbrough beat Richmond, Virginia's Lavar Lewis in FBR Shop Quick 32. The Honda-Suzuki of Sanford 5.60 final went to Jason Herron over Curtis Griggs, and Herron also claimed the season title.

Jay Windsor beat Shayne Proctor in Saturday's Nitrous Express Pro ET final, while Crazy 8s runner-up Lassiter beat Fun For All's Ron Arnold on Sunday. World famous twin Barry Purnell beat Travis Boudreaux in Saturday's Schnitz Racing Street ET final, and brother Gary celebrated the win excessively. Sunday's final went to Randolph "Boo" Brown Jr. over Sherrell Blake. And Andy Smallwood took Real Street B over Darion "Nanu" Payne.

Grudge racing was hot and heavy at The Rock, with local favorite Johnny "Airtime" Locklear cleaning up whenever he had the chance. Real Street winner Teasley split two aboard Greg Wallace's "Now and Later" 1000 against Caleb McDougald.

2010 IHRA Nitro Jam Schedule

New look, new format highlights 2010 IHRA Nitro Jam schedule

With a brand new look and format to the series comes a revamped schedule as the IHRA Nitro Jam series welcomes one brand new facility and one former track back to the fold as part of the 2010 Nitro Jam schedule which was released on Tuesday.

Palm Beach International Raceway, which signed with the International Hot Rod Association earlier this year, will open the 2010 season while the series also welcomes Virginia Motorsports Park back to its family of tracks with the final spot on the 2010 calender.

IHRA will also add Rocky Mountain Raceways in Salt Lake City to the Nitro Jam schedule after hosting one of the new format style events in 2009.

“With a new year comes a brand new look to the series and to the schedule and we couldn’t be any happier with the direction things are going,” said IHRA President Aaron Polburn. “Never in all my years have I been more excited to get a season underway. Next year will look completely different while at the same time retaining that same IHRA feel. We are still going to focus on the core values of what makes IHRA unique in the motorsports world, just with an exciting new format.”

One of the biggest changes to the 2010 schedule will be the trimming of all Nitro Jam events except for two from three days down to two and the implementation of the “race only” format for professional classes. While sportsman racing will remain exactly the same with the exception of one less day of racing, the professional categories will have invitation only fields with a new race and winner being named at the conclusion of each day of racing.

Professional categories primarily consisting of Top Fuel, Pro Fuel, Prostalgia Nitro Funny Car and Pro Stock will still be awarded points and will crown a champion at the end of the year. The rest of the professional categories will be an exciting mixture of classes unique to each individual track and event.

Sportsman competitors will continue to crown champions at the completion of each event with the winners earning a spot in the Tournament of Champions to be run at the season finale at Virginia Motorsports Park.

Check back with NitroJam.com at a later date for a full lineup of professional classes and exciting extras at all Nitro Jam events in 2010.

The use of the word “nationals” will also be dropped as the series will restructure to help stand out in a crowded drag racing marketplace. The series will be known simply as Nitro Jam and concentrate primarily on nitro burning machines as the core of the show.

“More than anything else we have had a history of looking at what is successful and what is not successful. We know that after looking at other forms of entertainment it is critical that we package a program into a three hour window with the right ticket price while still providing a great show,” Polburn said. “By doing what we are doing I think we can expand our audience, put on a better show in a shorter period of time and work inside a budget for each of the marketplaces.”

Kicking off the new-look Nitro Jam season will be a stop in West Palm Beach, Fla. in late January. Palm Beach International Raceway will begin the 2010 season the weekend of January 29-30 with an event at one of the top facilities in the country.

The state-of-the-art track will be the first to experience the new Nitro Jam as the IHRA returns to Florida with a national event for the first time since 1999.

PBIR will be followed by a trip to State Capital Raceway in Baton Rouge the weekend of March 6-7. After an extremely successful debut last season, State Capital Raceway will once again bring its unique personality to the schedule in 2010.

Rockingham Dragway will retain its spring date the weekend of May 1-2 and will provide the last stop in the southeast before a hectic June that features the IHRA’s version of the western swing.

Following Rockingham the series will pick up and head west as Rocky Mountain Raceways in Salt Lake City hosts a Nitro Jam June 18-19 followed closely by the a pair of three-day events in Canada.

Castrol Raceway in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada will retain its status as a three-day event the weekend of June 25-27. Grand Bend Motorplex in Grand Bend, Ontario, Canada will complete the Canadian portion of the schedule July 16-18.

The final half of the schedule will remain similar to 2009 with U.S. 131 Motorsports Park in Martin, Mich., Maryland International Raceway in Budds Creek, Md. and New England Dragway in Epping, N.H. holding down summer dates. Maryland International Raceway will host its event August 28-29 and New England Dragway will hold down a date the weekend of September 11-12.

U.S. 131 Motorsports Park is still working out its official date.

Virginia Motorsports Park will bring the season to a close October 15-16.

After hosting a national event in 2009 Dallas Raceway will be taking a year off from the IHRA schedule, but will still play an important role in the sportsman season in 2010.

Ken Thomas and Lenmar Motorsports Clinch Back to Back TOPMA Points Championships

Ken Thomas and Lenmar Motorsports Clinch Back to Back TOPMA Points Championships with their 11th Win of the Season

(11-10-09) MT. PLEASANT, TX – Ken Thomas and Crew captured their 11th win of the 2009 TOPMA season during series finale at Texas Raceway on November 7th.  With this win, Ken clinched the series points championship and became only the second driver in TOPMA history to win two points titles in a row.  Only Lenmar teammate Gaylen Smith was able to equal the feat in 2003/2004.  Here is what Ken had to say about the double:

“What a relief and a joy to bring home the title again.  This one was a little sweeter because we really had to earn it in the end.”

Thomas continued, “After we disintegrated our Ram clutch in Memphis then lost the Bad Bird in Kansas, I thought our chances for another championship were all but over, but Gaylen Smith and Mark Eddins stepped up and help us get into the Hell Hoss ’67 Jeffers Mustang.  The car performed nothing short of spectacular in the last 9 races of the year and we were able to get it done.”

A look at the numbers for TMS/Lenmar team in 2009:
TOPMA Races- 21
TOPMA Wins- 11 (4-Bird, 7-Stang)
TOPMA Finals- 15
TOPMA Round Results- 45 wins/10 losses

Ken would like to thank his family and crew for their attention to detail and hard work during the season.  TMS is also very grateful to their dedicated sponsors and all of those who helped out during the year:

AUTO CLUB NHRA FINALS PREVIEW

TOP FUEL SOAP OPERA TAKES CENTER STAGE ON NHRA’S CHAMPIONSHIP SUNDAY

All four pro classes will crown their champions at the season-ending Auto Club NHRA Finals, Nov. 12-15 at Auto Club Raceway at Pomona

POMONA, Calif. — Nine months ago, the biggest storyline entering the 2009 season revolved around Larry Dixon and Tony Schumacher, who had combined to win the last seven Top Fuel titles and nine of the last 10.

In what was as compelling an offseason as the NHRA had seen in some time, decorated crew chief Alan Johnson parted ways with the U.S. Army team to create his own team with the backing of Sheikh Khalid bin Hamad Al-Thani.

Johnson brought most of the U.S. Army crew with him and he hired Dixon, who’d won back-to-back championships in 2002 and 2003 with NHRA icon Don “The Snake” Prudhomme, to take the seat.

The questions swirled as to how this would affect the balance of power in Top Fuel: Would Schumacher and the new U.S. Army team with crew chief Mike Green continue to dominate or would Alan Johnson and Dixon assume the Alpha position in Top Fuel?

With one race left in the 24-race NHRA Full Throttle Series season – the 45th annual Auto Club NHRA Finals Nov. 12-15 at Auto Club Raceway at Pomona – it’s as close to a toss-up as you can get: Schumacher and the Army team have 2,485 points as they seek to win a sixth straight title; Dixon and the Al-Anabi team have 2,484 as they seek to unseat The Sarge.

And by no means out of the mix — lurking 48 points back — is the David against those two Goliaths, FRAM Tough Guard dragster driver Cory McClenathan, whose 31 career wins make him the second winningest driver in NHRA history to have not yet won a championship.

Schumacher and then-crew chief Alan Johnson delivered arguably the greatest single performance in NHRA history at the Auto Club Finals in 2006 to win what was at the time their third straight championship.

Schumacher never led the points during the entire 2006 season and he still trailed rival Doug Kalitta by 26 points as he staged against Melanie Troxel in the final round of the final race of the season. Drivers earn 20 points per round win so the only way he could get past Kalitta was to win the race and set the national record (and earn the 20-point bonus).

Known simply as “The Run,” Schumacher delivered a stunning 4.428-second pass as dusk fell at Auto Club Raceway to win the race (earning 20 points) and set the national record (earning a 20-point bonus) to win the championship.

Now Johnson and Schumacher are on opposite sides of the starting line and it would seem only fitting that the two rivals should begin the race on opposite sides of the ladder and meet in a winner-take-all final for the ages as dusk falls on Auto Club Raceway on Nov. 15, 2009.

In Funny Car, Robert Hight and the Auto Club Ford Mustang team have all but wrapped up their first championship. Hight leads teammate Ashley Force Hood by 105 points and if he maintains at least a 101-point lead through qualifying he would be the 2009 NHRA Full Throttle Series Funny Car champion.

In Pro Stock, Mike Edwards and the A.R.T./Young Life Pontiac team have, for all intents and purposes, an insurmountable 139-point lead over three-time champ Greg Anderson. Edwards, who leads all drivers with 15 No. 1 qualifiers this season, just needs to qualify to clinch his first championship.

And in Pro Stock Motorcycle, it’s a two-man race between Hector Arana and defending champion Eddie Krawiec, who trails Arana by 54 points.

SCHEDULE: Pro qualifying sessions are scheduled for 1:30 p.m. on Nov. 12-13 and at 11 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. on Nov. 14. Final eliminations begin at 11 a.m. on Sunday, Nov. 15.

A Passing of a Passionate Drag Racer and Friend of Many

A Passing Of A Passionate Drag Racer And Friend Of Many.
Monday, 9 November 2009 - Posted by Dean Neal

The Staff, Volunteers and Administration of Western Sydney Dragway and the sport of ANDRA Drag Racing nationally - regretfully announce the sudden and shock death of local Modified Bike Racer Darren Shepherd.

Shepherd was participating at the Sydney venue’s regular Track Championship events in Modified Bike, before leaving the venue as the incident occurred.

Shepherd was found to have suffered an accident outside the WSID competitor gate on the exit to Ferrers Road, Eastern Creek.

The accident, tragically proved to be fatal for a racer who was not only a Rocket Allstars Points leader and prior venue Track Champion – but Darren Shepherd was genuinely regarded as one of the most generous, pleasant and passionate racers to ever participate at Western Sydney Dragway.

Shepherd was respected by his rivals, admired by Drag Racing followers and a favourite of all of the Western Sydney Dragway track staff and volunteers.

Darren’s passion for the sport was clear for all to see, having recently won a National Round after travelling 3800kms to Mackay in Queensland and back for the Sunstates event there.

Famously, ‘Shep’ rode his bike across to Perth, Western Australia for an event, before racing the same bike down the quarter mile and then riding his Harley Davidson ‘Deuce’ back home again to Sydney!

He really lived and loved Drag Racing.

The Shepherd tragedy also followed a nasty racing related incident involving Super Sedan racer Allan Ostey.

Ostey’s Porsche car suffered a rear axle failure at high speed during the Track Championship event.

Ostey’s plight resulted in multiple hard impacts into the WSID safety wall.

Due to the nature of the accident, a determination was made by the on-track Paramedical services to have Ostey cut from the car and was then transported to Westmead Hospital.

Ostey is in a stable condition and in good spirits despite injuries to his ribs, a punctured lung and vertebrae.

In what was obviously a difficult day, the Western Sydney Dragway Administration would like to thank the Paramedical Services, Jeff Pattison, Kyle Pearson and the entire WSID Safety Safari Fire Crew for their extraordinary efforts.

In closing, I am sure many Drag Racing pundits can recall many fond memories of Darren Shepherd. It may help us all in the healing process to document our memories of a responsible and skilled racer and more importantly – a wonderful bloke.

Email us your memories of Darren at dean@andra.com.au.

A list of comments will be published publicly within a week or so.

Roth Racing Launches New Website

Kitchener, ON – November 6, 2009 – Jim Roth, the owner of J Roth Racing, is proud to announce the launch of his Pro Modified racing team’s new website -- www.jrothracing.ca

This is the first of many marketing initiatives to come from the winners of The Fourth Annual “Thunder by the Beach PMRA Challenge” at the Grand Bend Motorplex last September.

Earlier this year, J Roth Racing debuted its new 1941 Willys Outlaw Pro Mod for the 2009 PMRA and ADRL racing seasons.  The car was built by Low Down Hot Rods and features an Atchison-prepared 526-cubic inch Alan Johnson engine with a PSI screw blower.   But that’s only where it starts.  Not only is this car “hot under the hood”, it looks great on the track and has true show-stopping power.  The Willys features another original paint design by John Bear Collision, and this car turns heads wherever it goes.

The car’s driver, Jeff Roth, is well known on the Canadian racing circuit and is backed by his hardworking team including such familiar faces as Crew Chief Dave Bankes, Larry Summerfield, Marc McCrae, and Ashley Medeiros.

“This team worked tirelessly throughout the season to analyze the stats and tune the car into a winning machine,” said team owner Jim Roth.  “As with any new car, there’s a lot of kinks to work out, but with a lot of elbow grease and perseverance, we figured it out and took the car to a big win at the end of the season.  We’re really proud of the work these guys have done, and we’re gearing up for an exciting season in 2010.”

J Roth Racing would like to thank all its associate sponsors from past years and welcomes new sponsors to the team with an exciting new marketing program.

The website, designed by Lori McCrae of Racecards.ca,  features streaming video, a photo gallery, news releases and a sponsorship page.  Jim says the website is only a kick-off to a variety of other marketing initiatives for 2010.  “We are offering three levels of sponsorship for this upcoming year – Platinum, Gold, and Silver – which will provide major exposure for participating brands and companies who sign on.”

For sponsorship inquiries, please contact Lori McCrae at (519) 664-0363 and visit www.jrothracing.ca  for more details.

Texas Grim Reaper HIts Career Best 3.82, 198

(October 27, 2009) LIBERTY HILL, TX – Steve Wiley is living his dream. The Liberty Hill resident has been competitively drag racing for over 20 years and has now become one of the fastest drivers in his class. He has been competing in the Texas Outlaw Pro-Mod Association (TOPMA) for the past three years. In 2007, his first season as an owner/driver, Steve finished the year 3rd in points and was named “Rookie of the Year”. In 2008, he had a breakout event going to the final round but coming up a bit short against Joshua Hernandez of Conroe in the National Guard sponsored ’57 Chevy at the ADRL Drag Illustrated Dragpalooza IV at Houston Raceway Park.

Steve had his ups and downs during the ’08 season driving his Hemi powered ’68 Camaro. Wiley was confident on making a run for the 2009 TOPMA championship, as well as competing in several ADRL events. After a string of bad luck and having a few major engine mishaps, Steve thought that his racing was over for the year. Luckily for Wiley, one of his fellow TOPMA competitors, Jimmy Hector from Big Spring offered Steve a deal he couldn’t refuse. Hector and Wiley came together to form Hector-Wiley Motorsports in June and since then have made considerable progress.

Hector said, “I’ve been racing a very long time and I figured that it was about time for me to get out of the seat. I wanted to keep on competing and knew that Steve had run into some problems, so we talked about the possibilities of making this deal work. I can’t tell you how proud I am of this team and how quickly we have pulled things together. We all take pride in going out and doing the best we can each race. I am really excited for the future of this team and the success we will have.” The two along with their crew chief, Jason Kennemur have the Hector-Wiley entry among the elite in the 1/8 mile drag racing world.

Over the past few weeks the Texas Grim Reaper Team has been going faster and faster, during a test lap prior to a TOPMA race at Dallas Raceway, Wiley piloted the supercharged, AJ 481X powered; 1963 Corvette to a personal best elapsed time of 3.907 seconds at over 195 miles per hour, while the accomplishment was exciting, it was not without severe consequence, as connecting rod failure ruined the night of racing for the team. The team pulled together to repair the damage to the car and to get the engine back in it and ready to go to the ADRL LenMar Motorsports V World Finals in Ennis, Texas.

On Saturday, October 24th during the final qualifying round of the Pro Extreme class, the team believed hey had a tune-up in the car that would get them in the field of 16 for the opening race of the 2010 ADRL season. After more than half of the 49 entries had made their final attempts, the Texas Grim Reaper ran another career best lap of 3.821 seconds at 198.12 miles per hour, putting them at the number 8 spot in the field. The run gave Wiley lane choice in the first elimination round against the 2006 ADRL World Champion Bubba Stanton from Mississippi. Bubba and Steve left the line at virtually the same time, while Wiley had a big advantage at the 60’ mark, Stanton was able to make it to the finish line just ahead of Wiley. Even though the team didn’t make it past the first round, it was definitely an awesome day of racing for the Texas Grim Reaper Team.

“We’re servicing the car and getting it ready for the ProMod Shootout in Kennedale in two weeks. Our team is looking to build upon what we have done so far this year. TOPMA has got to be one of the strongest local racing organizations out there, we have a lot of really fast and consistent cars, it would be a huge accomplishment to win the shootout.” Wiley went on to say, “Look for the Hector-Wiley Motorsports/Texas Grim Reaper Team to be a force to be reckoned with in the 2010 season.”

2010 NHRA Full Throttle Series schedule

Drag Racing News: 2010 NHRA Full Throttle Series schedule by NHRA. NHRA announces the 2010 Full Throttle Drag Racing Series schedule.

National Guard ADRL Announces 2009 Racer Awards Gala Details

O’FALLON, MO (Nov. 6, 2009) — The National Guard American Drag Racing League (ADRL) is pleased to announce its Racer Appreciation and Awards Gala II will be held Dec. 12, in the Citrus Ballroom at the luxurious Wyndham Orlando Resort in Orlando, Florida. The semi-formal event punctuates the final day of the massive three-day Performance Racing Industry (PRI) trade show at the Orange County Convention Center just down the street from the newly renovated resort.

“All season long our race teams put on a great show for National Guard ADRL fans and I really look forward to the one night a year we get to return the favor,” series president Kenny Nowling said. “Celebrating the accomplishments of our five world champions is a real honor for me, as is handing out a few special awards to some very deserving people.”

In addition to presenting 2009 National Guard ADRL World Championship rings to Todd Tutterow (Pro Extreme), Khalid Al-Balooshi (Pro Nitrous), Spiro Pappas (Extreme 10.5), Scott Gray (Pro Extreme Motorcycle) and Matt Hartford (Extreme Pro Stock), the world’s premier eighth-mile drag racing series will name its 2009 Rookie of the Year, Driver of the Year, Employee of the Year and Track of the Year.

Also, the Jim Oddy Award, presented last December to Pro Extreme driver Frankie Taylor, will go to the ADRL racer who best demonstrated sportsmanship in conjunction with competitive drive throughout the 2009 season.

FW: Gulitti named IHRA Sportsman Driver of Year

When Chris Gulitti began the 2009 racing season he knew he had a car that could be competitive.

What he didn’t know, however, was that he would have the kind of season that would garner him national attention and one of the most prestigious awards in IHRA sportsman competition.

Gulitti, behind the wheel of his ’98 Firebird Top Sportsman machine, did all that and more this season with two national event victories, a win in the Summit All-Stars race and a second place finish in the Renegades Division on the Summit Pro-Am Tour. And all of that has led to Gulitti being named the 2009 IHRA Sportsman Driver of the Year.

“This means a lot to us. My team, myself, my father, my wife, Raymond Goodkowski and Ed Williams – everyone that has helped us this season, this is just an incredible honor,” Gulitti said. “We have worked really hard on our program and we stuck to what we felt was working and it has really paid off.

“We are not always the fastest guys out there, but we can certainly be competitive and when we have to we will get in there and make some noise.”

Gulitti (Spring, Texas) had a remarkable season on both a national and regional level, winning two national events at Dallas Raceway and Pine Valley Raceway and winning the Summit All-Star race at the Spring Nationals at Rockingham Dragway in April.

He also finished runner-up at the season opening Mardi Gras Nationals in Baton Rouge.

Gulitti capped off his incredible season with two Summit Pro-Am victories and a second place finish in the Renegades Division.

Thanks to that incredible season Gulitti not only qualified for the inaugural Tournament of Champions, but he eliminated four additional positions on the Top Sportsman ladder thanks to his career defining year.

He will next try to cap his season with a world championship when the Tournament of Champions gets underway.

“It would be an incredible accomplishment if we could cap our season with a championship. When we were in Rockingham and we saw the level of competition that we were going to be up against, going up against all of the guys you read about all year in DRM and on the IHRA site, that would mean a lot to get a win against that group,” Gulitti said. “We already went up against that level of competition once before in the All-Star race and to take down the titans of the class earlier this year was pretty amazing.

“That win gives us a lot of confidence and if we can go in there and win the tournament it would be an incredible end to an amazing year.”

Gulitti admits that none of this would have been possible without the support of his family and the hard work of everyone involved with his race team.

“Without my wife and my dad and my team none of this would be possible,” Gulitti said. “During the season when times are tough you are working hard and you are racing it is tough to say thanks, but I am very grateful for these guys. My brother also got into the tournament and between us it really is a family operation.

“I also wanted to thank Abruzzi Racing Transmission, Marco Abruzzi, Torque Tools Incorporated, PMS Excavation, Richard Patterson and All-Star Properties. I can’t wait for the tournament to get underway and to get started with 2010.”

FULL THROTTLE REVEALS NEW 'NO CHOKE MIXTURE'

Same Refreshing Taste. New Personality.

Englewood Cliffs, NJ, November 6, 2009- Full Throttle Energy Drink introduces a new and improved full-flavored formula complete with reliable energy ingredients to help you get the job done.

“Without compromising Full Throttle taste, this new formulation provides true refreshment with real energy,” said Emma Medina, Full Throttle brand director. “We’ve gone back to the basics and created a Full Throttle that gets straight to the point—delivering hard-working energy in a can.”

Prominently displayed on the can’s back panel is Full Throttle’s new ‘No Choke Mixture’ promise: ‘full flavor you don’t have to force down, and reliable energy ingredients that help you get the job done. No mystery ingredients. No bull’. The mixture is a refined formula delivering 100% of daily value Niacin (Vitamin B3), 100mg D-Ribose, and 100mg Caffeine, per 8 fluid ounce serving.

“Along with our new formula, we’ve also over-hauled the look and feel of Full Throttle with graphics inspired by classic automotive design elements, evoking a traditional Americana vibe,” said Medina. “The whole can communicates the hardworking personality of Full Throttle.”

That “can-do” mentality also is personified in Full Throttle Energy Drink’s title sponsorship of the National Hot Rod Association, drag racing’s governing body. As the official energy drink of the NHRA, Full Throttle embodies the sport in which its hard-working pit crews and drivers deliver 300 mph speeds in only four seconds time. The new branding will be incorporated into signage, sampling and other track-related activities during the 2010 NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing Series.

Full Throttle will be launched nationally, this November, in 16-ounce cans and will be available in 5 flavors: Citrus, Blue Agave, Red Berry, Mocha and Caramel, with a suggested retail price of $1.99.
